A Street Within is an office for a real estate developer in Ahmedabad, planned around the idea of a street. A spiral ramp at the centre is the main node. It carries people between floors and sends them out along three arms. Public programmes line the central corridor, the spine of the plan, with the staff work areas in the wings to either side. The executive offices sit on the first floor, apart from the public areas but still in view of them.
The roof slopes down from the first floor towards the public corridor, giving the spaces beneath it double-height volumes. The higher volumes let hot air rise and escape, drawing cooler air in from lower down.
The sequence runs from the site and its trees to the final plan. The programme is first laid out as one block, coloured by group. A node is set on the entry axis, and the groups are drawn out of the block into bars along three arms from it. The arms then split into pairs of wings with gardens between them, and the executive bars lift to the first floor around the spiral ramp.
The outer skin is solid, a barrier against the heat of Ahmedabad that also adds thermal mass to keep the inside temperature steady. A slit in the roof works as a light well and lets air cross the building, and photovoltaic panels on the roof take the direct sun. The sun studies trace these against the sun's path; the section runs through the public corridor and the spiral ramp.
Gardens fill the ground between the arms, and the work areas along each wing are glazed onto them.
